Solid-State Electrolyte

For argyrodites in a d50 3–5 µm band, how much conductivity lost over 24 h at 30% relative humidity is driven by specific surface area rather than chemistry?

THE QUESTION

Which argyrodite composition simultaneously exceeds 10 mS/cm at room temperature, survives 4.3 V versus Li/Li+ without decomposition, and retains conductivity after 24 h at 30% relative humidity — the triangle no reported composition satisfies, given that conductivity alone is already at 22.7 mS/cm?

WORK ORDER

Specific surface area versus composition in lithium argyrodite degradation during humid exposure

BACKGROUND

What this Apodex Lab is

Solid-state lithium batteries require solid electrolytes that conduct lithium ions rapidly, withstand high cathode voltages, and survive ambient moisture during handling without releasing toxic hydrogen sulfide gas. While single-laboratory reports cite lithium argyrodite room-temperature ionic conductivities as high as 22.7 mS/cm, commercial acceptance levels settle for 1 mS/cm or more, or 4–10 mS/cm, because moisture sensitivity and high-voltage stability force compromises. Manufacturers tooling dry-electrode pilot lines must write electrolyte powder purchase specifications, deciding whether moisture tolerance requires altering the crystal chemistry or can be achieved through powder morphology.

Published literature aggregates 3,816 experimental solid-state electrolytes with 27,645 conductivity entries and 852 computational entries, but lacks matched humidity-retention and specific-surface-area measurements on the same samples. Interlaboratory benchmarks and round-robin exercises in 2024 confirmed that evaluation procedures vary widely between laboratories. Consequently, reported claims of moisture tolerance in halogen-rich or multi-cation argyrodites leave exposed specific surface area unmeasured and unmatched to comparators. It remains unresolved how much of the conductivity lost over 24 h at 30% relative humidity and 25 °C is driven by exposed surface area rather than cation or halogen substitution.

The Solid-State Electrolyte Apodex Lab measures the area-normalised degradation rate constant across three argon-handled argyrodite compositions (reference Li6PS5Cl, Li5.4PS4.4BrCl0.6, and tin-oxygen-substituted Li5.4P0.95Sn0.05S4.35O0.05Cl1.6) held within a fixed d50 3–5 µm band across three surface-area tiers targeting about 8, 5 and 2 m²/g. By recording impedance before and after a 24 h humid hold on 46 pellets alongside continuous H2S monitoring, the measurement delivers the percentage points of retention gained per m²/g removed versus initial conductivity lost. This decides whether cell makers write moisture tolerance into procurement as a certified surface-area window or must disqualify sensitive chemistries and fund coating routes.

WHY NOW

Why the field is spending on an assumption

Solid-electrolyte databases collect ionic conductivities across thousands of reports, but they lack matched records for humidity retention and powder surface area. Published moisture-tolerant compositions rely on powders whose specific surface area was never reported or matched against comparators, leaving chemical substitution confounded with particle morphology. At the same time, manufacturing processes already control powder particle size to enable sheet coating, yet no dataset tests whether adjusting exposed surface area alters moisture degradation more than altering crystal chemistry. Because all-solid-state battery protocols vary between laboratories, measuring these effects requires testing reference and substituted compositions at matched particle sizes under a single fixed humidity protocol.

WHAT WE’D BUY

What we would ask a laboratory to run

We are not buying the answer. We are buying a measurement with an interval — and the bars it will be compared against.

A test facility synthesises three argyrodite chemistries under argon: Li6PS5Cl, Li5.4PS4.4BrCl0.6, and Sn–O-substituted Li5.4P0.95Sn0.05S4.35O0.05Cl1.6. Each powder is processed into three surface-area tiers targeting about 8, 5, and 2 m²/g while remaining inside a d50 3–5 µm particle-size window. Across thirteen lots, pressed pellets undergo 24 h exposure to 30% relative humidity at 25 °C. Impedance spectroscopy before and after exposure yields an area-normalised degradation rate constant for each chemistry, with pairwise ratios bounded to a 90% confidence interval width factor of 1.35 or narrower, alongside absolute conductivity loss resolved to ±0.6 mS/cm per lot.

SCOPE & LIMITS

Measurements apply to pressed electrolyte pellets under a single 24 h hold at 30% relative humidity and 25 °C, rather than bound separator sheets or operating battery cells.
