THE QUESTION

Which fluorine-free surfactant holds hexadecane contact angle above 60 degrees — the oil-repellency property no current replacement matches — while keeping surface tension at or below 22 mN/m, against 21.5-22.3 mN/m for the best branched TMS surfactants and 15-20 for fluorinated, and passing OECD 301 ready biodegradability?

WORK ORDER

Receding hexadecane angle versus aqueous surface tension for fluorine-free surfactants on smooth clearcoat

BACKGROUND

What this Apodex Lab is

Replacing fluorinated surfactants in coatings and industrial fluids requires surfactant chemistry that simultaneously reduces aqueous surface tension and repels oils without persisting in the environment. Industrial specifications demand an aqueous surface tension at or below 22 mN/m, a hexadecane contact angle above 60 degrees, and a pass in OECD 301 ready biodegradability. Fluorinated surfactants reach 15-20 mN/m, whereas branched trimethylsilyl alternatives reach 21.5-22.3 mN/m. If fluorine-free surfactants cannot meet both targets on a uniform film, formulators must accept reduced dirt resistance or redesign cleaning processes.

Published reports claim fluorine-free hexadecane contact angles up to 81.4 degrees, but these figures rely on coated, textured fabrics where physical roughness artificially elevates the advancing contact angle. Practical dirt resistance correlates with the receding contact angle on smooth surfaces. Patent disclosures for fluorine-free coatings typically cap contact angles at no greater than 60 degrees, whereas older copolymer records documented hexadecane angles of 70 degrees alongside water angles of 97 degrees. Furthermore, surface tension and contact angle are routinely measured on separate samples or unaged films. A fluorine-free concentrate achieved third-party qualification in September 2023, providing a reference benchmark, yet no study has paired receding hexadecane angles with aqueous surface tension on aged, smooth substrates across systematically varied fluorine-free chemistries.

The Specialty Chemicals Apodex Lab measures aqueous surface tension alongside fresh and post-aging receding hexadecane contact angles for seven fluorine-free formulations applied to smooth clearcoat with roughness below 50 nm. Following 500 h of aging at 70 °C and 50% relative humidity, the work order fits the slope linking contact angle to surface tension across 21.5–26.0 mN/m, locating the qualified commercial formulation on the resulting frontier. If any candidate holds a post-aging receding angle of at least 60 degrees at or below 22.0 mN/m and passes OECD 301B testing, development advances to application trials. If the maximum attainable angle falls below 45 degrees, the fitted boundary proves the target is inaccessible on smooth clearcoat, directing resources toward alternative coating designs.

WHY NOW

Why the field is spending on an assumption

A fluorine-free surfactant package passed an externally imposed qualification standard in September 2023, providing a reference formulation against which experimental candidates can be benchmarked. Published oil-repellency claims report advancing contact angles on textured fabrics, where physical roughness amplifies wetting angles. Industrial dirt-resistance patents evaluate receding hexadecane angles on smooth surfaces instead. The slope linking receding oil contact angle to aqueous surface tension across fluorine-free chemistries has never been measured after thermal ageing. It remains unknown whether combining a receding hexadecane angle above 60 degrees with an aqueous surface tension at or below 22 mN/m is physically impossible or merely unmeasured.

WHAT WE’D BUY

What we would ask a laboratory to run

We are not buying the answer. We are buying a measurement with an interval — and the bars it will be compared against.

This work order applies seven fluorine-free surfactant formulations, spanning aqueous surface tensions from 21.5 to 26.0 mN/m, to smooth clearcoat films with roughness below 50 nm. Receding hexadecane contact angles and aqueous surface tensions are measured fresh and after 500 h of ageing at 70 °C and 50% relative humidity. The measurements return the maximum post-ageing receding hexadecane angle attainable at or below 22.0 mN/m within a 95% confidence interval of 4 degrees, and the slope of angle against surface tension within 1.5 degrees per mN/m. The qualified commercial package is evaluated on the same panel, and the highest-performing candidate undergoes 28-day OECD 301B ready-biodegradability testing.

SCOPE & LIMITS

Dip application on smooth clearcoat establishes an upper bound on achievable angles, and conclusions apply strictly to the evaluated surfactant families under static ageing rather than dynamic weathering.
